Painting 1

This artwork is basically trying to convey the 'leap of faith' element of the transition into adulthood. The making of this artwork came at a time of changing attitude and perspective on my behalf. At the initial process of developing this painting, i had applied a fearful persona as i had feared the aspect of finishing high school and becoming independent and taking on a wide variety of responsibilities.

However, midway through this artwork, i went on an excursion to the university of Sydney. towards the end of the excursion, i had realised how much i had enjoyed the idea of going to uni. even though it wasn't the same as studying at uni, it did reduce some of my fears and anxieties about making that change. this change of emotion and perception is what drove the final manipulation of the artwork. the use of the loose brush strokes and the not-so-precise edges translates the freedom and the weight lifted off my shoulders.

It should also be noted that the artwork is in the form of an eagle. This takes a symbolic meaning of renewal and a sense of fearlessness. In spite of its enormous size, the eagle still takes flight, seemingly effortlessly, taking on the meaning of not allowing the illusion of limitation to ground us in our flight. It serves as a mental liberation. The Alchemy symbolism of the eagle is a representation of prime matter; the start of an alchemical operation. The eagle spreads its wings over the step into creation and fans the fire, encouraging growth of new matter.

The Aztec and Mayan meaning of the eagle is affiliated with the dawning sun, and is a magnificent celestial power, able to shine light into our world.

The Celtic symbolism of the eagle is associated with the symbolism of water, and the intuitive oracle water serves as. The Celts invoked the eagle for assistance in "diving in" for treasures of wisdom.

The Christian eagle meaning is associated with Christ himself. The eagle seems to easily ascend the skies, looking into the sun with unblinking focus. we relate symbolism of Christ's unblinking faith in the Way, the Truth, and the Light. We also see themes of renewal (baptism) as the eagle plunges the soul of man into the sea, and lifts them out renewed and cleansed.

The Greek meaning of eagle is symbolic of authority, rulership and virility. It's warrior status (energy, thrust, courage, bravery, fearlessness) is evident by Zeus's strong affiliation with the eagle in Greek mythology.

Painting 2

This artwork was basically an experimental one as i didn't really have a prior concept of what i wanted to convey, but i was driven to paint through the feelings and emotions in which i had encountered at the time. i wanted my thoughts and feelings to drive the brush and form an artwork based on my perception of childhood vs. adulthood.

As i looked at the artwork from afar, i had realised that it reminded me of the image of an ultrasound scan a mother gets of her unborn baby. it slightly resembled a foetus awaiting birth. to me, it had a symbolic meaning of my current state in life. it resonated with the act of making that transition into adulthood from the edge of seventeen.

Painting 1

The above painting depicts an older person on the right with a younger person on the left. the older person is basically "passing on" his knowledge towards the younger person. it ties with my concept of growing through the stages of life and making that leap from childhood to adulthood.

a healthy reminder for peter to get his game on!

Leaving a nice little message for my wonderful teacher, Mrs Hayward, after a long wednesday afternoon. "she smelled of daisy's" came from a song lyric on the radio at the time.

Painting 2

The above image basically represents a boy, on the verge of adulthood, trying to hold onto the remaining pieces of his childhood which is gradually breaking away.

A new blank canvas preparing to be given a voice!

An interesting discovery i stumbled upon outside of the schools front gate after leaving art on a wednesday afternoon. personally, i think it's a work of art!

Changes to my BOW

Over the recent weeks i have contemplated over certain aspects of my BOW. i had initially intended to include, not only a triptych of paintings, but also a visual diary to go along with it, including drawings of Bill Henson photographs and polaroid photographs taken myself to compliment the drawings and quotes within the diary.

However i have started to realise that the visual diary doesn't really tie in with my paintings. it feels as if they were done by two completely different artists as they don't really use the same mediums or styles. they both have the same concept, but i just don't feel that they work with each other on certain levels.

So i have decided to remove the visual diary from my BOW as i believe that my paintings are enough to convey my concept. Therefore, my BOW will no longer be categorised as a "collection of works" but rather defined as a Painting.

New Found Artist: Adrian Lockhart

Adrian Lockhart (1947-Present) is an abstract artist, primarily using paint and pencil. His delicate observations of light, shadow, colour and composition are a counterpoint to today's hectic pace. Using a technique which exudes a sense of timelessness, he captures the essence of a subject, be it a still life, a seascape, a figure or a sketch.

Progress on my BOW

So far, I've narrowed down my bow idea to a more specific concept. it will consist of a triptych of abstract artworks. these artworks will be on large sheets of paper with each one of the papers representing childhood, adolescence and adulthood. ideally i want to convey the progression of life, focussing on these major periods of time in ones life. these artworks will altogether measure up to 3m (length) x 2m (width), which is the maximum requirement.

this triptych will be done by paint and charcoal, purposely crafting the artworks as a black and white piece. i have so far done several preliminary sketches and artworks to simulate my final product and to also identify arising problems and so forth.

Visual diary

along with my triptych of artworks, i have also purchased a diary which has brownish-recycled-like paper in which i will do several drawings prodominantly in charcoal. i have so far made sketches in pencil in most of the pages. i will also include several text in many of the pages to further validate my artworks and also to further emphasise my concept. within the diary i am drawing not only several appropriated images of bill hensons work but also several drawings of images which may resonate with childhood and adolescence.

the diary which i have purchased is really ideal for my concept. it is very cheap-looking and quirky which is why i purposely chose it as it ties in with my concept of childhood and its playful attributes. i want my artworks to be perfect in the sense that they arent perfect i.e. nothing and nobody is perfect and so i want to represent that through my artworks, which is part of the reason why my visual diary is very cheap and quirky and which is also why i have chosen to make abstract artworks as i enjoy the simplicity and innocence behind the mentally and emotionally-driven strokes of paint and charcoal which are applied conciously in order to ignite ones true and explicit feelings within the form of an artwork.
